Bottled Water … Scam?

Tonight I took my run to scenic Goose Creek Park in beautiful Thornbury Township. It features a half mile paved walking/running trail and (bonus!) it’s right around the corner from my house. Fran was meeting me there for a walk after she got off work so I thought I’d get a run in beforehand. I felt good tonight and did over 2 miles at an 8.45/mile pace.

After my run I got a drink of water at the park fountain and wondered if they had bottled water at GooseBottled Water Creek Grill, the restaurant adjacent to the park. Fran hadn’t arrived yet so I walked over. I was happy to find out that they did, so I dropped $1.59 on a 20 oz. bottle. Why did I do this? The water at the park was perfectly fine, if a little warm. It wasn’t even a name brand bottle. I’ve been desensitized by the great marketing machine into thinking that bottled water is better. Twenty years ago, I didn’t think twice about drinking from the tap.

My wife still drinks from the tap and I give her a hard time about it (I think she does it to be stubborn and to drive me nuts). I should probably compromise, go green and buy a filter.

August 26th. It’s been about 2 1/2 months since I started this endeavor and I felt like expressing some thoughts. As of Monday, I’m down to 176 pounds from my starting weight of 182 on June 13. Not exactly ground breaking progress. To be honest, the number doesn’t mean as much to me as the actual physical changes that I’m trying to achieve. I just felt that 25 pounds is about what I need to lose to get where I want to be.

Over the last week or so I’ve kind of gotten bored with this regimen and a bit frustrated with my lack of progress. I’m not giving up but I’m trying to find new ways to work towards my goal and make the posts more interesting.

That being said here’s my run data from yesterday:

8/26/2008 Run

I kept a good pace for awhile, then I had to stop to tie my shoe. Remembering my sportband issue from the other day, I thought “$#!%, now my data will be all skewed”. I carried on and the data seems to be at least mildly accurate, so no harm done. Whatever. There’s starving kids and suicide bombers in the world and I’m bitching about an inaccurate $60 sportband.

This experience is following a familiar path with other things that I’ve attempted in the past. I start with enthusiasm & vigor, spend a bunch of time & money on it initially, get bored and kick it to the curb. This is an ENORMOUS crossroad that I’m facing. If I can carry on & stick with this to my goal and achieve it, it will put me over the hump to accomplish other stuff in my life. I want to stop this pattern of failure & shortcoming. Wish me luck.

A Night at the Ballpark

August 26, 2008 by Doug · Leave a Comment

Reading PhilliesOne thing that I love to do in the summer is go to ballgames. I have a few friends who share my passion for going to different major and minor league ballparks, as well as revisiting old favorites. Last night I was out at First Energy Stadium in Reading to see the R-Phils take on the visiting Connecticut Defenders.

Now tonight I made a groundbreaking revelation about my eating habits. If anybody reading this has ever visited ANY ballpark, you may have noticed that the food selection is, well, not the most selective as far as calorie counting is concerned. I had resigned to just eating crap for dinner, but I found that I was still aware of what I was putting in my body, and I went right back to eating right the next day. I don’t have to tell you that this is HUGE for me.

The food choices at a Reading Phillies game are top notch. They have a signature sandwich called the Churger,The Churger which is a burger and a chicken breast separated by a piece of American cheese. I absolutely HAD to get one of these along with a large FF w/ ketchup and a 24 ounce Pepsi. Hey, it’s a tradition ok?? This was followed by a piece of shoo-fly pie (Delicious! Must be the PA Dutch in me) and a cup of Dippin’ Dots in later innings.

One final note, the weight is still coming off SLOWLY, but it is coming off. Monday I was at 176, my lowest in recent months.
